I am very hesitant to get into anime these days. Is this in that top 1% that isn't just every single anime-cliche put together?

It is VERY worth it dude ^--^ Kirito kicks SO much ass! Definitely one to recommend to anyone and everyone, and trust me, I've been very picky these days too. Not many animes these days feel like a whole lot of thought and love was put into them, but this one has been given a LOT of TLC. ^---^

Definitely check it out, it's awesome. ^^ It's really well done, the first arc especially. My husband even really likes it, and he's been super picky about what anime he watches ^^

Its one of my favorite shows of the season in spite of the flak it gets in some quarters (seriously, the series has a lot of haters). Though I could have done with less of Asuna getting molested in the second story arc.

The series does have a lot of totally unnecessary hate going around... Most of them are complaining about crap that's just plain difficult to explain in anime format, but if they read the light novels, they'd have their answers... The novels are REALLY good, I'm on the 2nd Alicization novel, Alicization Running, though I'm gonna have to back-track and read all the side stories at some point.
Eh, the Asuna stuff didn't bother me so bad. I liked the way she held up to it (seriously, the people who say she turned into a weak little princess that needs rescuing really need to pay attention to both her situation and how she reacted to the things that happened. she didn't turn all weak and weepy after this crap, she's a fighter! she's ALSO a strategist, though, ffs, and she hasn't had any other damn openings!). And besides that, it's rather... expected. Sugou/Oberon is disgusting, IRL, so of course in game, too, especially considering he feels like a god, and the kind of people he would have to have working on that program on the 300 SAO trapped survivors he caught on their logout would have to be the kind with questionable morals, so... meh. It all made sense, it wasn't there for the hell of it, it was stuff that, given the situations, would happen.

Given something you said in one of the FMP threads on animesuki I thought you hadn't read the novels yet, but it seems you're actually farther along than me (I'm just starting Alicization, I held off on that one a while because its kind of intimidating).
I actually think some of the complaints about SAO are legit, but even among the ones that are I think a lot of them are way overblown. I particularly have some issues with the criticisms of the main characters and their relationship, as Asuna/Kirito managed to edge out Yui/Yuuya as my top anime couple for the year.
I don't actually have much a problem with Asuna being trapped for most of the second arc. Its more the fetishy stuff I have a problem with. That bit with the scientist's and their avatars just seemed really unnecessary and probably colored my impression of what came later with Sugou as well.

I don't remember what it was, but I probably just hadn't yet at the time, lol, it was awhile back, whenever I mentioned it there. ^^; The Alicization stuff is pretty mind screwy, so, uh, don't read it while tired or anything or it won't make sense. It still might not make sense, but... yeah. XD
I hate when people say that KiriAsu happened too fast. They were in the game for 2 years, there's a lot we didn't see, and ffs, it was an IN GAME marriage. The whole reasoning for it was that A) It showed total trust, what with the shared inventory stuff and all, and B) It allowed them to keep tabs on one another, so they would always know where the other was and if they were in trouble. They had real reasons for it. Their out-of-game relationship progresses TOTALLY DIFFERENT. The Alicization novels are four years after they're free of SAO, they're 20/21 y/o and STILL NOT MARRIED. I mean, yeah, it took them until then to finish up high school, because of being stuck in the game 2 years, but even so, the point is... They could've up and married then, but didn't. They're still dating and taking things slow and normal.
Oi. /rant
...As for the Asuna stuff, yeah, it could've done without being fanservicey, but, meh, there's been some of it going on since the start and it got worse starting the ALO arc. I'd already read those parts of the novel before they aired, so I knew it was coming, didn't bother me as much as it seemed to have bothered most of the fandom. I just wish they'd done Jotunheim Q_Q I understand WHY they didn't, but, but, Tonkiiiiiiiiii

I was under the impression there was only a short gap between Mother's Rosario and Alicization, but then I'm still early in the second prologue.
Some of the stuff that led up to Kirito and Asuna getting together actually did seem a bit rushed, but I really liked how they interact with each other afterwards. Yeah they're a bit lovey-dovey but they also seem to be able to interact with each other naturally and discuss things honestly. That may not sound like much but when you're talking about anime couples its actually something fairly significant.

I'd thought Alicization was closer to Mother's Rosario, too, but in Running, they mention the time it's been since SAO.
As lovey-dovey as they are, it's nothing that's really a stretch, nothing that made them seem suddenly OOC or anything... A lot of it was being young, a new relationship, and seizing the moment, considering they're front-liners in a death game. They're insanely adorable, really, I love their interactions. And a lot of time passes from when Kirito drags her down to take a nap in the sun and from the Kuradeel incident, that we just don't see. That was something like a year, wasn't it? I'll have to double-check, but for all that it looked quick on screen, there's a lot we just don't see.

7.5 months between when they first started REALLY talking and when they got together, so, yeah, there's a lot that we don't see that would explain their progress.

I didn't say I minded them being lovey-dovey. It is one of the complaints some people have about them though. A lot of people also seem to hate Yui for some reason, though I think she's adorable.
Heh... that last statement could sort of apply to the Yui from another show as well as SAO Yui. Although then again the other Yui doesn't seem to be getting very much hate these days.

Oh, I know you didn't, didn't mean to imply that's what I'd thought. ^^ But a lot of people DO seem to have that problem, lol, so I felt the need to defend it XD
Poor Yui... I <3 her. Normally her type WOULD annoy me, but I just really love the overall interactions, and some of the stuff from the novels makes me love her even more. They're all just so freaking cute... they make me melt <333

Cute kids in anime can be hit or miss for me as well. But occasionally there's one that's absolutely adorable.
On a different note, I've been a bit unsure what to make of Suguha's feelings towards Kirito. I'd kind of like to believe she was just confused by her emotions after spending two years hoping he'd escape from that death game, then having to deal with him pining after a girl who's still trapped on the other side when she wants to try to close the distance that had developed between them over the years, but I think I might be pulling the wool over my eyes a bit if I do that.
