Its a remake of the original, one of many. The original had abnormally high viewings and profit margins because it combined sci-fi with drama, and had themes of environmentalism and Japanese nationalism in a time when japan still felt pretty bad about the whole war thing.
Since then execs drooled over the numbers, and wanted to rehash the same shit with the same expectations, and it has never worked.
This remake is different. Its still keeping most of the original storyline and characters, then adding 200% more characters, and fleshing it all out. There were some big differences towards the end, but overall it kept everything the same. I think if anyone wanted to watch some of the Yamato series, I would recommend the original movie (synopsis of the original series), and then this series.
There's considerably less jet fighting, and the ships are much faster and more agile than the original. But 90% of the screen time is devoted to the characters, so there's lots of dialog.
The original series had the main female in a skintight outfit, which caught on in sci-fi animes and has never waned. This series takes it to the next level and has half the crew as females. Although there's no porn, the camera is often positioned at certain angles.
Overall B+, but I prefer the original movie's much darker ending.

Nice to know, thanks for the info! I haven't actually seen the original, but my dad is, somewhat surprisingly, a fan of it. I think I remember him even mentioning the new series, but I don't know if he ever saw it or not. I'll have to let him know it seems worth the watch if he hasn't ^^

I really enjoyed Yamato 2199; the start was a little weak but it got very good as it went along. I haven't actually seen the original series but several people who have gave the remake high praise.
It does have a few flaws though. Despite the updated characterization, the attitudes of some of the male characters towards their female counterparts seemed a bit dated at times -some of them didn't seem to trust the women on the ship to be able to take care of themselves or do certain jobs. Also there are at least three separate occasions where spacecraft seem to have their engine randomly go kaput. Granted its arguably realistic for things to sometimes go wrong when engines are being pushed to their limits, but the fact that all three incidents happened when it was convenient for the story was pushing things a bit.

Yeah, Darth that was the problem with the action scenes. Each time an issue came up, they had the exact solution they needed and then solved it. Plot-armor kept the good guy planes from being damaged to the point where they could not land.
The females hold important positions. Nurse/Doctor's Aid, Scientist, Officer. As with the females being treated worse, I noticed they didnt want the grey haired one to be a fighter pilot, but they got over it. Not wanting Yuki to pilot a jet was justified though, seeing as she is not a pilot. The aliens seemed to be shocked at the site of the general's wife, whether she was being jailed or set free. I never really understood that. I dont remember anyone being sexist against the nurse. The girl that gets possessed: I don't even remember what her job was.
