ProBoards allows you to use the 3rd party Live Chat for chatboxes. It's a Java Script chat box, so if you run something like No Script for Firefox, you'll have to make sure it's allowed if you want to run it. I think the script is called "addonchat.com"
Registering for an account is not required, I just ask that you use the same user name as your forum name.
We can discuss the possibility of doing RP sessions in the chat box, if there's enough interest.

I installed Java, but I couldn't seem to access the chat, even before I put that plugin in (given what I've heard about Javascript I thought something that allowed me to control which sights could use it was a good idea). Maybe I'll try reinstalling Java later...

Huh. I'm... not sure. I'm terrible at this stuff... You said you installed No Script? I think you have to have both the addonchat.com and proboards.com scripts allowed for the chat to work, but nothing else. At least, that's how it's working on Firefox on my end.

Got it set to allow proboards and add on chat. Besides I had the same problem even before I installed Noscript. Maybe I'll try to update Firefox or reinstall Javascript or something. It's a little early to start stressing out about it too much.

Hrm... Weird... I messed with the code a bit, removed part of it. It's still working on my end, hopefully it will work on yours now too?

No luck thus far. I wonder if TK would have any suggestions. He seemed pretty technically inclined...
Prior to my updating to a new version of Java I was being told I needed a plugin (but the plugin wouldn't install properly). Now that I've updated my Java I just get a blank grey box. If I open the chat room in a separate window I get a blank gray box and above that a box which displays a Java loading thing until it eventually produces a "Error. Click for details" message. If I click there it says "ClassNotFoundException" with the error being "Client.class"
Actually it seems the loading thing eventually gives an error. If I click on the "Error. Click for details" message it says its a "ClassNotFoundException"

Maybe he will... I know nothing about Java, so I have no idea why it isn't working... Have you tried a different browser, like Chrome? I suppose there's a chance it might give a clue as to what's causing the problem. I've been using chrome when messing with the forum so I don't run into script issues, though it DOES work on my Firefox.

if they have the latest version of java, (face it I doubt the chatbox has anything that older versions of java dont) and its still not working then its got to be some sort of security issue with the browser, its just not letting it work.

I updated my Java too, but I still haven't gotten the chat working with IE, Firefox, or Chrome. That being said Java doesn't seem to work properly on Oracle's own Java testing site either (though it seems to be working fine for plenty of other things on other sites). The list of suggestions on the Java testing page haven't been that helpful thus far.

Would a fresh install work? Uninstall java completely, then reinstall? I have no idea...

with mysql, at least, uninstalling doesnt always wipe out all the application data folders, so a clean install will still use old settings. I dont know if java is similar, but if you do decide to uninstall, before reinstalling it again, search for anything related to java and get rid of it.

You could be right, as I've uninstalled and reinstalled Java multiple times. But I'm not that sure what to look for in terms of wiping settings.
Given that I'm planning to get a new laptop in a few weeks anyway I'm wondering if this is worth the effort to troubleshoot any farther...
