1) How does Mao deal with her cigarette habit when stationed aboard the TDD-1?

How did they build an underground base on the island without anyone noticing? Supplies and cargo can come in via a sub, but thats after the submarine dock is built.

Probably constant switching of personnel and not logging everything down during shipping. Some facilities will constantly switch in new people to work on one or two things under an assumed premise, then when their work is done, they just have new people come in and so on.

They also have nearby supply depots where anything coming from un-vetted sources could be dropped off then they could use their own personnel and everything to bring it the rest of the way? Good question, though, the sheer amount of personnel needed to get through at least the initial phases was probably a lot greater than what they had that they could fully trust. Compartmentalizing is good and all, but they still have to bring them to the site... Maybe some desperate workers paid very well to be kept in the dark about where they were taken and being cut off from the outside world while on site... Nothing with any kind of GPS/satellite signal while on site and what not, perhaps...

You know if we'd done this before End of Day by Day/TSR came out one of the big questions could have been "what's the point of having Sousuke guard Kaname if he's constantly getting called away on other missions?" Actually even with the impracticality of that arrangement being highlighted in canon it still seems kind of odd that Mithril went for it between the North Korea and Hong Kong incidents.

I think it was mostly Kalinin's insistence that kept him there. I don't think most of the higher ups of Mithril wanted it, which was why he ended up recalled. Pretty sure him staying was Kalinin trying to be fatherly in a way, doing good by him.

Why does Melissa Mao carry a Germany Army spec P8 instead of a regular USP-9? The main practical difference between a P8 and a standard USP is that the safe and fire positions on a P8's safety are opposite the ones for a standard USP and most other pistols with a frame mounted manual safety.

Honestly, I think a better question would have to be along the lines of why the hell Mithril had a photo of Kaname from four years prior, and Gauron and Amalgam had one that looked only a few days/weeks old? Would it REALLY have freaking killed some of those spies in the intelligence division to get a freaking CURRENT photo!? XDDD

Because Mithril's intel division sucks. Either that or they're a bunch of lolicons. More seriously perhaps it was meant to establish Kurz. Though I guess having him comment that she's pretty based on a more up to date photo would probably have worked too. Maybe the author just thought it would be amusing? I actually brought up the thing with Mao's pistol just because it seemed a bit dead around here. Although I honestly don't think it was a particularly fitting choice for her. She seems like a M1911 girl to me.

Eh, gun preferences. Maybe there's something about it she likes or whatever. I mean, one of Kurz's favored sniping rifles is the VSS Vintorez, and while it is awesome in it's own way, there are still better choices out there with those too.

I don't want to sidetrack this thread with too much gun talk, but didn't Kurz only use the VSS Vintorez in one side story? Actually my main criticism of that choice wouldn't be its capabilities (which are actually pretty unusual) but the fact that it ought to be darn near impossible for a westerner to get a hold of one in the FMP universe due to the ongoing cold war. Its a specialist weapon and even in our world very few people outside the former Eastern bloc have ever fired one.

Maybe it was a prize from someone who, uh, 'no longer needed it'? XD A bit of windfall? But hey, they also have several Russian contacts, so who knows? (Though most likely it was just a screw up since they use airsoft models, maybe one they had wasn't designed accurately and they just didn't know?)
And yeah, I think you're right Tabby, Kurz seems to change his gun fairly often, I'm not sure he really does have a favored one. Wasn't the one he fired as his "last shot" some really weird gun for him to be using? Arctic Warfare or something to that effect? I don't remember for sure, though I do remember my husband being confused by it being his choice lol

I did up a list of the rifles Kurz uses that I could identify, but I did it in a separate thread since I didn't want to sidetrack this one too much.
